Lucas Middle School

Principal: Thomas Seckler |
Lucas Middle School, Durham Public Schools’ newest, will open in August 2012. With approximately 151,000 square feet and a capacity of 640 students, Lucas Middle will have eight classrooms per grade level.
Features
Lucas Middle is already being described as “very Durham” with its unique architecture.
The school will be in a wooded, park-like setting on 38 acres adjacent to a new public park. Designed by the same architectural firm that designed recently opened Sandy Ridge Elementary, the new school will be certified at a Silver Level for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
The building includes project rooms for every team, computer classes, video production area, gymnasium and auxiliary gym, biotechnology including a greenhouse, and a full arts program (band, strings, chorus, theater).
Lucas will be equipped with cutting-edge technology including both wired and wireless infrastructure, cable, BrightLink interactive technology in all classrooms, laptops for teachers and 100% of Durham Public Schools’ baseline technology.
Timeline
Durham Public Schools expects to name a principal for Lucas Middle by the end of January, and he or she should be on the job by March 1.
Furniture will be arriving for the new school this spring, and the widening of Snow Hill Road should be finished by May 31, well before the school’s opening date.
Only sixth- and seventh-graders will enter in August. Eighth-graders will attend beginning in August of 2013.
