Mission Statement: Lucas Middle School is committed to providing a rigorous and relevant project-based learning experience for each student. Implementation of a school-wide focus on 21st-century skills will promote collaboration, citizenship, problem solving, critical thinking, and responsibility within a dynamic and diverse learning environment.

Project Based Learning (PBL) is the instructional model implemented at Lucas Middle School. Academic content is taught through an inquiry process in which students address complex questions and authentic, real-world challenges. This model encourages creativity, effective communication, collaboration, and responsible use of technology. In some classes, PBL is the primary form of instruction. In other classes, PBL is implemented occasionally throughout the school year. Projects may vary in length, lasting a few days, weeks, or months.

The school’s state-of-the art facility supports this instructional model. Located on 38 wooded acres adjacent to a public park, the building includes project rooms for every grade level, a 400-seat auditorium, two gymnasiums, and a greenhouse. Lucas is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including the district’s first middle school Cybrary. Instruction is supported by six laptop carts, two computer labs, 30 iPads, 40 Nooks, and 25 document cameras. Each classroom is equipped with a BrightLink interactive whiteboard and at least four student computers.

In addition to traditional course offerings, students can choose from a variety of Discovery classes. Lucas offers a variety of computer classes; biotechnology; Spanish; and a full arts program (art, band, strings, chorus, and theater).
