Philosophy
Githens Middle School has been an integral part of this community since 1966. Our current building was completed in 1988. The students, parents, and teachers have worked diligently to make Githens a very special place. Each of our halls has its own assistant principal and guidance counselor. This "school within a school" environment helps students and parents feel more connected to the school. This type of innovation is just one example of what makes Githens special. Our students also have some of the most extensive course offerings in Durham. Geometry, Strings, Desktop Publishing, and Graphic Arts are just some of the courses that make the Githens experience unique.
Middle school is a time of change and transition. Our athletic program addresses the diverse needs of our students. We not only offer football, basketball, baseball, softball, and track, but also soccer, cross country, lacrosse, girls' field hockey, wrestling, volleyball, tennis, and even ultimate frisbee! Our after school program meets four days a week and provides a variety of activities ranging from study skills to social development skills. Transportation is provided home each day. Clubs such as the Gents and Queens help young people learn about themselves and grow to maturity. The Show Dogs Drill Team, a community based group, won a national championship last school year. Our student government is based on the United Nations model. Our students learn about other cultures and other people as we prepare them to compete in a diverse world.
Each child brings his/her own unique perspective on life and the world he/she is from. This rich combination of ethnic, racial, national, and religious experiences makes Githens truly a one-of-a-kind school!
Teaching
Our school program is designed to meet the diverse needs of our student population. We have pullout and inclusion classrooms providing additional acceleration of instruction. Looping helps students and parents improve the transition from grade to grade. Our larger size teams provide additional classes in geometry, algebra, and communications. Each student has the opportunity to excel and maximize his/her potential.
Services for Academically/Intellectually Gifted Students
The 7th grade program is a separate program for language arts. Our math classes are divided by levels. The 8th grade program is a collaborative program for language arts. Eighth grade offers geometry, algebra, and advanced math.
