Philosophy
Our rural setting in Northeast Durham, with over 20 acres of buildings and athletic fields, creates a perfect atmosphere for a safe and nurturing environment for middle-school students. Our diverse student body and faculty encourages an atmosphere of individuality and cultural pride.
The academic program focuses on an enriched and differentiated curriculum, higher-level thinking skills, student-generated products, social-emotional needs of adolescents, and a safe, orderly school.
OUR VISION
Chewning Middle School community is committed to a caring, tolerant, and enriching environment that encourages academic growth, clear and consistent communication between students, staff, and parents, high academic standards, and continuous professional growth.
Likewise, it is OUR MISSION to achieve a learning community of mutual pride and respect, foster a genuine interest in learning, focus the curriculum through the use of state-of the-art technology and recognized learning programs, and exceed prescribed expectations as established by the state accountability standards.
SCHOOL PRIORITIES

- Fostering a genuine interest in learning;
- Focusing the curriculum through the use of state-of-the-art technology and recognized learning programs; and

The faculty, staff and parents at Chewning Middle School take pride in providing students with a balanced academic, athletic, and extracurricular program that shows our "Cardinal Pride!"
Teaching
We place great emphasis on the use of student performance data to adjust instructional practices and learning activities. This will aid students in meeting performance expectations in reading, writing, and math. We are committed to incorporating and accessing technology across the curriculum in order to enhance student achievement in the core academic subjects. A standard set of instructional practices across the curriculum helps students develop and build on evaluation and critical analysis skills, as well as assessment practices which enable students to become accountable for achieving in elective courses.
Services for Academically/Intellectually Gifted Students
At Chewning Middle School, AIG students are served in Academically/Intellectually Gifted or enriched language arts classrooms where the curriculum is differentiated from the regular language arts classes through higher level thinking skills, flexible grouping, and independent studies. AIG math in sixth grade is Advanced Math. In seventh grade, students scoring at certain levels qualify for Algebra I. Other seventh-grade students are served through Advanced Math. Eighth-grade AIG math students receive either Algebra I or Geometry, dependent on their seventh-grade experience and placement test scores.
