Philosophy

The mission of the Middle College High School at Durham Technical Community College, a community characterized by diversity, high expectations and support for learning, is to enable students to accelerate their program of study and receive higher education credit, by providing an academically rigorous experience in a smaller and collegiate environment.

Teaching

Central to the mission of Middle College High School at Durham Technical Community College is to enable students to accelerate their course of study, thus allowing them to enroll in DTCC courses.  Students may take DTCC courses as their elective requirements; OR when they "place out" of MCHS core courses, which allows them to take the next level course with DTCC. For example a student who is prepared to take calculus while at MCHS, may enroll in a calculus class with DTCC, provided s/he has satisfied the testing requirement (see below).

Enrollment in Durham Technical Community College Courses
DTCC has two levels of course offerings:

  1. College Transfer Credit Courses, and
  2. Non-College Transfer Credit Courses. Both of these may count toward high school graduation requirements. However, only transfer credit courses will be accepted at four-year colleges and universities.

Enrollment in College Transfer Credit Courses at DTCC
For students to be accepted into a college transfer credit course, s/he must attain a minimum score on either of the following tests: SAT, ACT, ASSET, COMPASS. The ASSET and COMPASS are free and administered at DTCC. For details regarding these exams and minimum scores required, please contact the counselor's office at (919)686-3814.
