Durham Public Schools (DPS) announces a new option for students to gain valuable skills. The opening of the newly refurbished Holton Career and Resource Center is giving DPS students more opportunities to participate in workplace training that will prepare them for jobs and careers.

What is the Career Center?

The Career Center:

  • Offers programs that provide both training and instruction focused on traditional and new emerging industries.
  • Provides students the opportunity to earn industry standard certifications or significant progress towards completion of certification requirements.
  • Is an extension of the regular high school programs.
  • Allows students to maintain their affiliation with their home high schools while completing courses at the Career Center.
  • Features classes that are taught from midday into the evening hours.
  • Provides a challenging academic environment and unique learning opportunities.

Who Attends the Career Center?

Any DPS high school student who:

  • Is interested in completing courses which provide the opportunity to earn industry certification.
  • Would like to take Career/Technical courses not offered at their base high school.

How many courses can a student take at the Career Center?

  • Students may elect to enroll in one or more courses at the Center.
  • Students enrolled in three or more courses will be considered full-time Career Center students.

Course Offerings at the Career Center

(Courses will be offered pending registration requests)

  • Barbering – Two-year program
  • Construction Trades – Carpentry, Electrical Trades, HVAC, Plumbing
  • Small Engine Repair – Certification opportunity in two-stroke and four-stroke engines
  • Landscape Construction & Turf Grass Management – Design and maintenance of
    athletic fields, gardens, parks, and grounds
  • Visualization & Modeling
  • Computer Engineering – Cisco Academy
  • Small Business & Entrepreneurship – Skills for owning and operating a business

Course Registration

Students register for Career Center Courses during their regular registration process at their base schools. Simply request a registration form from your guidance counselor or Career Development Coordinator.

From I-40:

Exit I-40 at the Durham Freeway (Exit 279, Highway 147 North). Exit the Durham Freeway at the Alston Avenue exit. Turn right onto N. Alston Avenue. Turn right onto Taylor Street. Go past Eastway Elementary and Holton will be on the left in about .5 miles

From I-85:

Exit I-85 at Avondale Drive. Proceed South on Avondale. Turn right onto N. Alston Avenue. Turn left onto Taylor Street. Go past Eastway Elementary and Holton will be on the left in about .5 miles.
