Philosophy
City of Medicine Academy is a high school program that provides a four-year health career curriculum for students interested in pursuing health care careers

In August 2008, the City of Medicine Academy opened in the former Verizon Building. Close proximity to the hospital and other medical facilities will bolster CMA students' access to job-shadowing, internships, guest lectures and additional opportunities. The Academy will be housed in this location for approximately three years while a new facility is built with 2007 bond funds.
Teaching
The City of Medicine Academy is designed for highly motivated Durham high school students who are ready to undertake serious academic work and career-related internships. It is expected that these students will be able to enter college with advanced credits and earn industry standard certification.
Students graduating from City of Medicine Academy will be able to:
- Make health career decisions suited to their individual needs, aptitudes, abilities and career objectives.
- Develop a pre-professional and pre-technical foundation that supports advanced education and/or entry-level employment.
- Develop a foundation required for employment in a changing healthcare environment including:
- Analysis and problem solving
- Communications skills
- Professional behavior & ethics
- Science & Mathematics
- Teamwork
- Technology applications
- Establish healthy lifestyle behaviors.
The Partnership
The Academy provides specialized programs in the health sciences to Durham Public Schools students. The opportunity to learn in a real world environment is a key component of the Academy. Durham Public Schools, Duke University, Durham Technical Community College, North Carolina Central University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are collaborating on this venture.
