Philosophy
Southwest Elementary School is a community of learners organized around students and the work that they do. Teachers are leaders and inventors of high content, quality work that is challenging, interesting, and satisfying. Students will engage and persist with this work and will learn what teachers, parents, and the community value and expect. The school will maintain and nurture a climate that promotes collaboration, respect, and support among its major players (teachers, assistants, support staff, parents, students and community). The principal is a leader of leaders. Major decisions involving climate, curriculum, use of allotment, and budget are reached through a process in which the staff and parents' input and views are considered. Success is experienced and celebrated on an on-going basis.
Teaching
The instructional program at Southwest is guided by the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Our instructional staff utilizes a variety of teaching methods to ensure all our students receive an optimum learning experience.
The instructional program incorporates a focus on the changing world our children will eventually work and live in. The program of instruction receives support from our parents and numerous outside businesses. In addition, Southwest offers instructional support to our students with special needs. Southwest utilizes counselors, resource teachers, and programs of instruction to provide the extra help these students need. The staff at Southwest makes a committed effort to provide a strong instructional program for all of our students.
Services for Academically/Intellectually Gifted Students

Identification is made according to state guidelines; service extends for approximately half of the school day for 3-5 and 45 minutes per day in 1st and 2nd grade twice a week.
