Parkwood Elementary School is a traditional K-5 elementary school nestled in the Parkwood community of southwest Durham. We concentrate on providing a comprehensive, high-quality education within a caring and nurturing environment. Teachers work collaboratively with peers and parents to accommodate learning differences of each student. Academic, social, emotional, and physical development are key components of the instructional process.

Parkwood's instructional opportunities include lowered class sizes in kindergarten through 3rd grades, looping, team teaching, support programs in English proficiency, reading and special education, enhancement programs in visual arts, physical education, media, technology, and music, as well as a science lab and science resource teacher. In our classrooms, expect to see quality literacy instruction, cooperative learning, computer-assisted instruction, centered-based activity learning stations, interdisciplinary theme instruction, and adult and peer volunteer tutors. Our teachers are ready and willing to create learning opportunities outside of the classroom through varied field trip experiences. Some examples are the N.C. Zoo, Biltmore House, Tryon Palace, Pine Knoll Shores, Pilot Mountain, fossil digs, ore panning, Duke Gardens, Bennett Place, the State Capitol, Old Salem, Washington, D.C. and many others.
