Philosophy

The faculty and staff of Eastway Elementary School understand the important role the school plays in the life and prosperity of a healthy, productive and responsible citizenry. Each student is entitled to an equal opportunity to learn and experience success in the school environment. Our effort supports our students in learning to become contributing members of society.

Teaching

Balanced literacy and technology is integrated in all aspects of our curriculum. Each day starts with a 120 minute literacy block in which instruction is provided in small groups. The literacy block seeks to maintain a student to adult ratio of 5:1 or less. Our computer lab operates on a flexible schedule and teachers integrate technology as needed. We further offer a variety of field opportunities for all students.

Our school offers supplemental education services to all students. Supplemental education services are offered after school and on Saturdays. A full range of support and special services is available to Eastway School students, including counseling and services for exceptional children. A full-time social worker and a full-time family facilitator work together with school staff to assist our diverse population of families in helping their children to become successful students.

Services for Academically/Intellectually Gifted Students

A/IG services are presently provided for students in grades 3 through 5 who qualify for services by state guidelines. Additionally, promising students who do not meet state guidelines are served, as space permits. Students are served in small, pull-out instructional groups. Students work on a variety of integrated learning units, based on student interest and the state curriculum. Eastway School is presently revising its A/IG program and offerings as required by Durham Public Schools for the upcoming school year.
