Middle School Career Guidance

P1010014.jpgIn middle schools, DPS encourages students to explore careers and begin planning for their own careers.  Career Development Coordinators in each of the middle schools work with students as they explore careers.

These coordinators also work with eighth-grade students to utilize the Futures for Kids (www.f4k.org) Website.  Through this site, students take an online career interest survey to better direct them as they plan their high school course selections.  Students can read about careers and see video clips as well as sign on for an online mentor who has been screened by F4K.  Parents, too, can work with their children in career guidance by using the site’s tools.

The Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with DPS, sponsors a career fair for middle school students so they can learn more about career options in this area.  Use of F4K and the Career Fair all are free of charge.

Career exploration includes courses in:

  • Career decision-making
  • Technology
  • Life Skills
  • Business
  • Biotechnology
