Year-Round Schools

Many parents find that a year-round program is best suited to their student’s learning style, as well as to the family’s lifestyle. Three elementary schools — Easley, Holt and Pearsontown — and two middle schools — Rogers–Herr and Chewning — operate on a year-round calendar, which divides the year into 9–week quarters with a 3–week break (intersession) at the end of each quarter. Students are in school the same number of days as their counterparts in traditional schools. Their days are simply redistributed into blocks throughout the year. The traditional holidays are included in the development of the calendar and may lengthen the intersession.

The basic instructional program is the same at year–round schools and traditional schools. Traditional summer school remedial time is provided throughout the school year during scheduled intersession days within the three–week breaks. Services for exceptional children and enhancement classes are planned to match those in a traditional program.

Advantages

  • Continuity enhances the learning process.
  • Intersessions offer opportunities for enrichment and remedial help for elementary students during the school year.
  • Teachers have planning time throughout the year that allows them to better prepare for the needs of each student.
  • Regular breaks energize students and teachers, reducing the effects of “burn-out.”
  • Parents are provided opportunities for year-round child care.
  • Families have flexibility in arranging vacations during all seasons throughout the year.

Applications

Applications for the 2009-10 school year will be available at the beginning of January. Deadline for submitting an application is January 30, 2009. Transportation within the designated year-round regions is provided. If a student transfers to a designated partner school (for Easley or Holt), DPS will provide transportation. If a student transfers to a different school (not in the year-round region or a partner school), the family will be responsible for providing their own transportation. Board Policy #4132 guides all decisions on student transfers.
