Disability History and Awareness Month

In 2007, in order to increase public awareness for people with disabilities, Governor Mike Easley signed a law making the month of October Disability History and Awareness Month (Senate Bill 753).   In order to increase both public awareness and respect for people with disabilities, each school district is to incorporate instruction about disabilities, people with disabilities and the disability rights movement into the standard curriculum.

  • Since that time, the Exceptional Children’s Department has provided sample lessons to teachers and worked with individual schools on awareness programs.

  • Durham Public Schools continues to serve as a partner in Durham Parks and Recreation’s disability awareness event, Unity in the Community Day, which will be held on October 5th, from 11:00AM to 2:00 PM, at the Holton Career and Resource Center, at 401 North Driver Street.
