Crossing the Bridge to Common Core and Essential Standards

The Common Core State Standards in K-12 Mathematics and K-12 English Language Arts, released by the National Governors Association Center For Best Practices (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers, were adopted by North Carolina on June 2, 2010. North Carolina is in the first group of states to embrace clear and consistent goals for learning to prepare children for success in college and work.

The North Carolina Essential Standards were rewritten for all other curricular areas (i.e., non-CCSS courses). The New Essential Standards are written using the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy (RBT) to help move to the complex thinking expected from 21st Century graduates. The RBT was chosen because it has well-defined verbs and is built on modern cognitive research.

Durham Public Schools is committed to preparing teachers and students for a solid implementation of both sets of standards beginning in the 2012-13 school year, working towards our goal of having all students career- and college-ready and globally competitive. Our training and implementation plan is known as the Crossing the Bridge (CTB) to Common Core and Essential Standards.
