<p>The Youth Career Expo on Thursday, November 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Northgate Mall is your chance to start exploring careers that may be of interest to you.  Get advice from professionals about their jobs and learn what you have to do to get to where they are!  The opportunities are endless!</p>
<p>Students can enter to win $100 and parents/guardians can win a $50 gas card.</p>
<p>The Youth Career EXPO is a collaborative effort of Durham Public Schools Career-Technical Education, Futures for Kids, the Triangle Society of Human Resource Management and the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce.</p>

<p>Durham Public School’s will be offering summer school to high school seniors that need course credit that can meet graduation requirements by the end of the session.&nbsp; Parents will receive formal communication from their child’s school should summer services be required.</p>
<ul><li>Transportation will be free from the comprehensive high schools for students participating in this program. Buses will not transport students from the specialty high schools.</li><li>Summer School will include four weeks of instruction from June 20, 2011-July 19, 2011 with two days designated for EOC testing.&nbsp; </li><li>The school schedule will be divided into two sessions: (1) 8:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. and; (2) 12:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.&nbsp; </li><li>Classes will operate Monday through Friday on the third (3rd) floor of Holton Career Center located at 401 North Driver Street Durham.</li><li>Lunch will be provided free of charge to students attending first session. The designated lunch period will be over when students arrive for the second session at 12:30 p.m.&nbsp; Therefore, they will not be included in the meal count.</li><li>Graduation for all qualifying candidates will be July 22, 2011 in the auditorium of Hillside High School at 3727 Fayetteville Street Durham.</li><li>Registration is managed through the school counselor and ends June 14, 2011.</li><li>State legislation G.S. 115C-105.41 prohibits charging tuition or fees to students at risk of academic failure. Therefore, this opportunity is provided without fees.</li></ul>

    <title>"Open House" Sessions to Review Curriculum Documents</title>

<p>DPS Curriculum and Instruction Services offer two days in which PTA members or parents who are on School Improvement Teams may come to the Staff Development Center to review the draft documents.&nbsp; Please note that the documents are for teacher planning purposes.&nbsp; They are not intended for parent use.&nbsp; However, some parents may want to see them because of their involvement in school planning.<br /><br />The “Open House” sessions will provide teachers, support staff, and parents to review hard copies.&nbsp; These sessions will be on <strong>Thursday, May 26</strong> and <strong>Thursday, June 2</strong> at the Staff Development Center from 4-5:30 pm.&nbsp; Please note that there will not be an official program or presentation.&nbsp; However, there will be staff available to answer questions.<br /><br /><strong>Instructional Services Update </strong><br />In an effort to respond to a more standards-based approach to instruction and assessment as communicated in the DPS Strategic Plan, the DPS Curriculum Directors/Coordinators have been developing draft curriculum documents for the 2011-2012 school year.&nbsp; Since January, Instructional Services has created a draft Curriculum Overview and an Instruction and Assessment Calendar for each course in each grade.&nbsp; Both documents provide teachers with guidance concerning curriculum and pacing.&nbsp; <br /><br />The curriculum documents have been created in English/language arts, math, science, social studies, and secondary World Languages (Spanish and French).&nbsp; Additionally, calendars for elementary and middle school have been created for both traditional and year-round schedules.&nbsp; High school calendars include block, year-long (includes A/B), and early start schools (Early College/Middle College/ CMA).<br /><br />Teachers have been invited to review and provide feedback on the proposed curriculum documents from May 17-June 3.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Each principal at each school has designated a Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment Alignment (CIA2) Team of teacher leaders to ensure that each school has an opportunity to provide feedback in reviewing the curriculum documents.&nbsp; Additionally, the CIA2 Team will have an opportunity to review local assessments, if applicable, and provide feedback before the administration of the assessments.</p>

<h3>Notice to Parents/Guardians of Rising 6th Grade Students</h3>
<p>Students entering the 6th grade during the 2011-2012 school year, and attending public schools are required to receive a booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) vaccine before the start of school.</p>
<p>Parents/Guardians will be asked to provide proof of immunization (i.e. Certificate of Immunization) on the first day of school which is July 18, 2011 for year-round schools and August 25, 2011 for traditional schools.</p>
<p><strong>The Durham County Health Department will provide the Tdap vaccine free of charge while supplies last at:</strong></p>

<p>Pre-Kindergarten registration is going on now through the end of April. In order to be considered, a child must be four years old on or before August 31.</p>
<p>Parents interested in pre-Kindergarten for their children, can call 919-403-6950 (x6820) to make an appointment for registration. A universal application is used for the Title I, More at Four and Head Start programs. Registration also involves an interview and screening process.</p>
<p>Notifications of acceptance into the program will be sent by the first week of June.</p>

<p><img class="image-inline image-inline" src="resolveuid/3759f47bae66ae1c4c10c54526227dc0/image_preview" alt="NCCU Art Museum Exhibits DPS Student Art" height="235" width="400" /></p>
<p>The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Art Museum presents “Durham's Finest,” an exhibition of outstanding student artwork from Durham Public Schools (DPS) from January 8-28, 2011.&nbsp; In this select show, four two-dimensional pieces of art represent each of the district’s schools, plus three-dimensional artwork is also featured.&nbsp; This unique show is the school system’s only district-wide art exhibit and shows the progression and artistic development of the students from kindergarten through high school.&nbsp; By hosting the exhibit, NCCU Art Museum gives the students the rare opportunity to see their artwork in a real museum setting.</p>
<p>The opening floating reception is Saturday, January 8, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. for the student artists, their families, friends, art teachers, school officials, and board members from both DPS and NCCU.&nbsp; Welcoming remarks and the announcement of the three ‘Purchase Awards’ will be made throughout the afternoon by Kenneth Rodgers, Director of the NCCU Art Museum, and Mary Casey, Director of K-12 Arts Education for DPS. A string quartet will perform and refreshments will be served.&nbsp; Friends, families and the public are welcome.</p>
<p>After the reception, “Durham’s Finest” can be viewed during the museum's regular operating schedule:&nbsp; Tuesday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until January 28, 2011.&nbsp; The museum is closed weekends, Mondays and university holidays.&nbsp; Group visits may be arranged.&nbsp; (530-5079 or <a href="mailto:krodgers@nccu.edu">krodgers@nccu.edu</a>)</p>
