Home Base

Home BaseDear DPS parents and families,

As the school year gets underway, you may have noticed that we are not tracking your students' attendance and grades the same as before.

This year, the Department of Public Instruction is implementing in all school districts across the state a new system called Home Base which includes an instructional improvement (IIS) and student information system (SIS) for teachers, students, parents and administrators.

Because this system is new, there have been some bumps along the road in implementing it smoothly. Below please find some more information about and what it means for you.

Teachers will be able to use Home Base to access student data and teaching and learning resources. Students will be able to access their schoolwork, grades, and learning activities. Parents will be able to view their child's attendance and progress, and administrators can monitor data on students, teachers and schools. Not only does Home Base put data and resources at the users' fingertips, it does so with single sign-on access to the integrated system made up of the following components: Learner Profile and Student Information; Standards & Curriculum; Instructional Design, Practice & Resources; Assessment; Data Analysis and Reporting; and Professional Development & Educator Evaluation.

Within Home Base, the Student information system is known as PowerSchool – an online program that tracks each student’s attendance, grades, performance and other personal information. Schools are transitioning from the NCWise system, and DPS has been working with the state Department of Instruction to ensure this will be a smooth move for parents and schools.

We believe Home Base and PowerSchool will be a powerful new tool to help you be a more active participant in your student’s educational success. Principals and teachers will share information with you as soon as the system is live in your student’s school, so please stay tuned. We thank you for your patience as we transition to this new system.

The Parent Portal will be available to all families by the beginning of the second semester of the 2013-14 school year. Your child’s school will notify you when this feature is available.
