H1N1 Flu Update

Durham Public Schools is working closely with the Durham County Health Department to monitor the H1N1 flu outbreak.  H1N1 has been declared a pandemic, based on how widespread the flu is, not on the severity of the illness.

Parents are encouraged to monitor your school-age children for symptoms--a fever with a cough or sore throat.  Students who have these symptoms should stay home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medications.

Simple sanitary measures can help stop the spread of the flu.  Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.  Wash hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.

Planning Ahead

If a child is sick with a fever and other flu symptoms, you will be called by the school and asked to pick up your child immediately to prevent flu exposure to other students  Parents may want to prepare with your employer and make child care arrangements if possible. Parents should prepare for and anticipate a higher than normal prevalence of flu this year due to the regular seasonal flu virus combined with the H1N1 flu virus.
