School Playgrounds Benefit from Bonds

DPS Graduate Some DPS elementary school students greeted more than new teachers and classmates when they arrived for the start of the 2005-06 school year. Students at 11 elementary schools are enjoying new playgrounds, courtesy of 2003 bonds approved by Durham voters.

The new playgrounds are safer, offer more variety in equipment and are fun for the students. In all, some $800,000 has gone into the playground improvements at 11 elementary schools. In addition to brightly colored equipment, the playgrounds feature rubberized playground surfacing. This surface is designed to help reduce injuries when students fall.

Tracey Braden, Construction Coordinator, said the overall reaction to the new equipment and surfaces has been very positive. She said, “Students, teachers and parents have all indicated that the new playgrounds are a wonderful addition to our schools. We appreciate the support of Durham residents in approving the bonds that funded this improvement.”

The 11 schools that now sport new playgrounds are: Bethesda, Eastway, Merrick-Moore, Parkwood, Pearsontown, Little River, Eno Valley, Easley, Glenn, Oak Grove and Southwest.
