From the Superintendent

We have so much to celebrate in Durham Public Schools this month! Accolades abound for our hardworking and highly deserving professionals.
Congratulations to Gwen Johnson who has been selected as Principal of the Year. She was chosen by a committee of her predecessors, and we know she will do a wonderful job representing our district at the regional and state levels. What a great time we had surprising her with flowers and a plaque in the presence of a few staff members and students on October 28.
We all have known this for quite some time, but now the whole nation is in on it! DPS Chief Operating Officer Hank Hurd is among the 38 financial leaders to be named a Top CFO by Business Leader Media. Hank has one of the toughest jobs in our district, and we greatly appreciate his expertise and hard work.
Speaking of finances, we always are looking to help DPS employees make the most of theirs. If you are a 10- or 11-month employee, I highly encourage you to take a look at the Summer Cash account that is available to you.
I was glad to see some of you at the First Employee Health and Wellness Fair in late October. The participants learned some important things about their health, and the chair massages appeared to make some staff members very happy! It is vital that you take care of yourself even as you look after the children of this community.
Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all that you value. Your service to the students of Durham Public Schools is priceless, and I thank you for your dedication.
