DurhamCares Partners to Make DonorsChoose Projects a Reality
One recent Sunday evening Jim Johnson, a fifth-grade teacher at Burton Elementary, posted a request for $180 on the DonorsChoose.org Website to purchase technology equipment to use with students at his school. The next evening, he was surprised to see that his request was fully funded, thanks in part to a matching donation from DurhamCares.
DurhamCares is matching funds of individuals who donate to pay for DPS teacher projects on DonorsChoose. This is a great way for DurhamCares to support DPS teachers and increases the likelihood that our teacher grants will be funded.
Johnson, the Burton teacher, completed the request on Sunday, the project was funded on Monday, and by that Thursday the video cameras had arrived and students began using them on Friday. Johnson and fellow teachers at Burton are using Skype to bring together kindergarten and fifth-graders. They also hope to have authors use Skype to discuss writing with students. The new equipment allows Burton students to take virtual field trips.
DonorsChoose allows teachers to request funding and materials, and donors can search through different projects to support. DurhamCares has posted a link to Durham teacher projects on its site at http://www.DurhamCares.org/donorschoose/

DurhamCares was founded to help Durham residents love their neighbors; not just the people next door, but across town and even across the world. Their vision is to see our city engaged in serving each other, building relationships across cultural boundaries and transforming our community through committed involvement.
