DPS Gears Up for New Teacher Evaluation Instrument

Human Resource Services is currently hosting school-based professional development to familiarize DPS teachers with the new North Carolina teacher evaluation instrument and process. DPS has partnered with the North Carolina Association of Educators and the Durham Association of Educators to acclimate all teachers to the new instrument prior to April 2010. The district will begin using the new process starting with the 2010-11 school year.
Goals of the training are to help teachers understand the connection of the standards and evaluation tools to 21st century goals, provide a better understanding of the new standards and evaluation process and to create a framework for continued dialogue regarding the standards.
The Teacher Evaluation Process (TEP) involves a self-assessment, a pre-observation conference, observations and a post-observation conference. Teachers will be rated on five main standards: leadership, environment, content, facilitation of learning and reflection.
A rubric must be used in the evaluation process to rate each of standards mentioned above. The rubrics are formative in nature based on a continuum of improvement. Distinguished indicates the highest leved of achievement followed by accomplished, proficient and developing.
If you have any questions or wish to learn more about the evaluation process please contact Fred Williams, Executive Director of Recruitment and Retention via DPS email.
