Children of Magnet School Employees May Soon Attend Same School
On April 29, the Durham Public Schools Board of Education approved a policy change that will now allow children of staff members in magnet schools to attend those magnet schools.
The idea came from teachers at Durham School of the Arts. Since then, Student Assignment has done research into other school systems that have adopted similar policies. The proposed policy change was discussed at the February Support Services Committee meeting.
The new policy allows employees to request a transfer so their child can attend the school where the employee is employed full-time part-time or itinerant so long as there is space available at the school and at the grade level requested.
Fewer than 50 employees said they would be interested in such a policy so the impact on magnet schools is expected to be minimal.
