Administrative Staff Retreat

DPS administrators kicked off the new school year by going on a journey – a “journey toward excellence.” That was the focus of the three-day retreat which brought principals, assistant principals and central office administrators together to prepare for a great new year.

Board Chair Minnie Forte-Brown and Superintendent Eric Becoats began the event with a skit that discussed planning for a trip, including their packing lists, agendas and expectations. Chief-of-Staff Lewis Ferebee then greeted attendees and explained how planning a trip was tied to our school district planning our journey to sustained excellence.

Along the way, the group heard from Board Attorney Ann Majestic, keynote speaker Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu and Principal of the Year Elizabeth Shearer. They worked with area superintendents to examine testing results and strategies for improvement. Victories were celebrated and team-building challenges were conquered.

On the final day, a panel of student leaders from middle and high schools was assembled and the students shared their thoughts on how to build a culturally responsive school. The conversation was riveting and the administrators had an opportunity to ask questions and take notes on the student suggestions. The session ended with a rousing standing ovation for our student guests.

The train has now left the station – next stop: Excellence!
