DURHAM--LaKeesha Walrond, Assistant Principal of Neal Middle School, has been appointed Principal of Lakewood Elementary Lab School. She will replace Susan Wynn, who will leave after the end of the current school year to teach at the university level.
Walrond has been assistant principal at Neal since April 2002, where she was responsible for curriculum development. Prior to her service there, she was a Coordinator of Programs for Exceptional Children for Durham Public Schools for three years and Assistant Principal of Eastway Elementary School for one year. She was a Resource Teacher at Club Boulevard and the former Holloway Street Elementary Schools in the mid-1990s.
"Working with young people in a leadership capacity is a role that I embrace wholeheartedly," said Walrond. "I very much look forward to working with the Lakewood teachers, students, parents and community toward continuing the many successes they have initiated over the last several years."
Walrond is a candidate for a Doctoral degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from where she already holds two Master's degrees--one in school administration, the other in special education. She received her Bachelor’s degree in psychology and early childhood development from Spelman College in Atlanta.
"LaKeesha Walrond has quickly proven her exceptional leadership abilities in the instructional setting at the elementary level," said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. "The Lakewood staff, students, parents and community supporters will find her to be an excellent fit as they move closer to reaching their student achievement goals."
