Veteran Principal Named to Spring Valley Post

July 15, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTACT: Stacey Wilson-Norman, Assistant Superintendent, Elementary Curriculum and Instruction, 919-560-3730

DURHAM—Veteran Principal Barbara R. Parker will assume the role of principal of Spring Valley Elementary School for the 2010-11 school year.

Parker has been an educator in Durham for 30 years.  Under her leadership at R. N. Harris Integrated Arts and Core Knowledge Magnet School, the school has achieved high growth status under the ABCs of Public Education accountability program.  It also is a School of Progress.

Prior to her 2000 appointment as Harris principal, Parker was assistant principal at Carrington Middle School, assistant principal at Bethesda Elementary and a teacher at Southern High School.

“I welcome the opportunity to lead Durham’s newest elementary school,” said Parker.  “I enjoyed wonderful collaboration with the educators, parents and community of R.N. Harris, and I plan to develop strong relationships with the teachers, parents and partners of Spring Valley to provide an excellent education for the students of this school.”

Parker holds master’s degrees in education administration and special education, and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from North Carolina Central University.  She also has received certification in learning disabilities from NCCU and in reading from East Carolina University.  She begins her new post on Aug. 1.

“Barbara Parker is known in this district as a strong instructional leader and as someone who cares for the children at that school like they are her own,” said Superintendent Eric J. Becoats. “I am confident that she will set high expectations for learning at Spring Valley.  I know she will ensure that students have the support they need to succeed.”
