Veteran music educator and administrator will lead Durham School of the Arts

DURHAM—A veteran school administrator with extensive experience in music has been tapped as the new principal of Durham School of the Arts.  David Hawks, Principal of Bunn Middle School in Franklin County Schools, will replace Ron Roukema, who has accepted a school administrator position in China.

Hawks has served as principal of Bunn Middle School since 2004.  Before that, he was principal of Zeb Vance Elementary School in Vance County Schools for six years.

He was assistant principal of Zeb Vance Elementary School for one year, before which he served 17 years as director of bands for Roanoke Rapids High School in the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District.  He was assistant band director at Cape Fear High School in Cumberland County Schools in the late 1970s.

Under Hawks’ leadership, Bunn Middle School was named a School of Distinction under the ABCs of Accountability performance assessment.  He was Vance County Schools Principal of the Year in 2002-03.

“I am honored and humbled to be selected as principal of Durham School of the Arts. To serve as principal of a school is a position of trust and stewardship,” said Hawks. “I will dedicate my administration to continuing the tradition of excellence in the arts and academics for which DSA is so well known.”

Hawks holds two master’s degrees – one in education administration and one in music education – from East Carolina University.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“The Durham School of the Arts requires a solid administrator who possesses a deep and abiding understanding of arts education, and David Hawks certainly fills that bill,” said Superintendent Carl Harris. “His reputation for strong leadership in education and the arts is the perfect match for the students, teachers and families of DSA.”
