CONTACT: Calvin Dobbins, Associate Superintendent, Administrative Services, 560-3736DURHAM--Evelyn S. Slappy, assistant principal of Eastway Elementary School, has been appointed interim principal of Burton Geo-World Magnet Elementary School. She replaces Tanya Burton-Simmons, who has accepted a position in another district.
Slappy, who has been a public educator in Durham for more than 30 years, will serve as interim principal while a principal selection committee comprising teachers and parents conducts a search for a permanent leader. That committee will convene in January 2003.
Having taught at Oak Grove, Merrick-Moore, Bethesda, Morehead Montessori and Holt Elementary Schools between 1971 and 1998, Slappy became a principal intern at Holt in 1998. She was named assistant principal at Eastway in March 2000.
"I am thrilled with the opportunity to continue my tenure with Durham Public Schools as interim principal of Burton," said Slappy. "I look forward to working with the wonderful students, teachers, parents and community supporters who have dedicated themselves to high quality instruction."
Slappy holds a master’s degree in school administration from Fayetteville State University, a master’s degree in elementary education from North Carolina Central University, certification in Reading Recovery from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, certification in learning disabilities from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from St. Paul’s College.
"Literacy in the early years defines Evelyn Slappy's extensive career in elementary education, and it will serve her well at Burton Geo-World Magnet School," said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. "Her expertise in Reading Recovery and elementary curriculum will be integral to the Burton community’s efforts toward reaching its student achievement goals."
