Veteran DPS educator named principal of Mangum Elementary School

DURHAM—Gwendolyn D. Johnson, a longtime Durham Public Schools educator, has been named Principal of Mangum Elementary School. She will replace Settle Womble upon her retirement in June. Johnson has been Director of Instruction at Oak Grove Elementary School since 1999, with one year spent as an administrative intern at the school. She taught at the school for 22 years before being named to that position. During her long tenure at Oak Grove, Johnson also served as a Literacy Leader, Staff Development Coordinator, Mentor Coordinator, and Study Group Leader for the Realizing Achievement in Mathematics Performance (RAMP) initiative. She has also presented at regional, state and national conferences on Mathematics, Reading Recovery� and the Education of Young Children. She was Oak Grove Teacher of the Year and a finalist for Durham Public Schools Teacher of the Year in 1990-91. “I am thrilled to be named principal of Mangum, which has the reputation of having strong parental and community support as well as dedicated staff members,” said Johnson. “As the lead learner I look forward to getting to know each student, parent and staff member as Mangum continues its journey to greater heights.” Johnson holds a Master’s degree in School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master of Education degree from North Carolina Central University, and a bachelor’s degree in science from East Carolina University. “Gwen Johnson brings more than a quarter century of experience in elementary instruction to her position as principal of Mangum Elementary School,” said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. “She is very well prepared to take on this role and she will work wonderfully well with the students, teachers, parents and broader community of Mangum.” ###
