Three DPS Teachers Chosen as Kenan Fellows

Durham, NC - Three teachers from Durham Public Schools have been named Kenan Fellows, a prestigious designation given by the Program for Curriculum and Leadership Development at North Carolina State University.
Lauren Beeson of Durham School of the Arts, Tomika Altman-Lewis of Burton Geoworld Magnet IB-PYP Elementary School and Dr. Jeffrey LaCosse of Durham School of the Arts have been selected for this highly regarded program.
They are among 47 members from across North Carolina that make up the largest class of Kenan Fellows brought into the program in a single year.
Teachers are selected for the two-year fellowship to study very specific areas in the fields of math or science. They are given mentors from area universities or other research institutions and their research is sponsored by local businesses, corporations or foundations.
The DPS projects are as follows:
- Beeson – Solar Energy for Space Travel, Sponsor: NASA Flight Fellowship
- Altman-Lewis – Common Core Curriculum Design – Math/Science, Sponsor: North Carolina Department of Public Instruction
- LaCosse – Scientific Principles of Engine Assembly, Sponsor: NASA Flight Fellowship
The Kenan Fellows Program for Curriculum and Leadership Development is a competitive two-year fellowship offered to K-12 public school teachers. Its mission is to enhance curriculum relevance for the benefit of all students; engage teachers, business, and universities through unique professional collaboration; and promote growth opportunities for teachers and the teaching profession.
