Tuesday, Oct. 5

Putting their work to the test! Riverside High students will test their lightweight portable structures to see if the projects can withstand rain, wind and earthquake conditions.  The class will use a water hose, high wind speed and force to see if the structures really works.  Media is invited to the class at Riverside High School (3218 Rose of Sharon Road) from 1 - 2:30 p.m.  Students and the structural systems teachers will be available for interviews.

Final town hall meeting of Listening and Learning Tour—Dr. Eric Becoats, superintendent of Durham Public Schools, will hold his final town hall meeting to hear input about the future of Durham Public Schools.  The Listening and Learning Tour featured four community and employee meetings to discuss a variety of topics including teaching and learning, innovative ideas for improving the district, student services and preparing students for a productive future.  The final community meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at Spring Valley Elementary School.  The school is located at 2051 Northern Durham Parkway.

Friday, Oct. 8

Learning more than stop, drop and roll! Oct. 3-9 is national fire prevention week.  Creekside Elementary partnered with the fire department to help students learn more about fire safety.  Today, firefighters will visit the school and hold grade-level assemblies to talk about smoke alarms, exit plans and fire prevention.  Students will also see the fire department’s dog demonstrate the stop, drop and roll technique.  Creekside Elementary is located at 5321 Ephesus Church Road.  The assembly times are 9:10 – 9:55 a.m., 10:10- 10:55 a.m., 11 – 11:40 a.m., 12:35 – 1:15 p.m., 1:35 – 2:15 p.m. and 2:35 – 3:20 p.m.
