Tax-Free Holiday August 5-7
August 3, 2011
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Durham, NC - Back-to-school shoppers mark your calendars. The North Carolina sales tax holiday begins on Friday, August 5 and runs through Sunday, August 7. Clothing, footwear, and school supplies of $100 or less per item; school instructional materials of $300 or less per item; sports and recreational equipment of $50 or less per item; computers of $3,500 or less per item; and computer supplies of $250 or less per item will be exempt from sales tax.
To assist parents in creating their shopping lists, Durham Public Schools has created a SmoothStart Web site loaded with information about transportation, after school care and even the student dress code. On the same page parents will find a link to supply lists from DPS schools.
It is important to note that the specific types of items that are exempt from sales tax are defined in detail for the holiday. Items are not exempt from sales tax just because they are required by a child’s school or sports team.
For more information about the North Carolina sales tax holiday, contact the North Carolina Department of Revenue at 877-252-3052.
