DURHAM— Tahira Stalberte was named Chief Communications Officer for Durham Public Schools.  She was appointed at a Board of Education meeting on Thursday, August 26, 2010.

Stalberte, a media relations specialist, has been working with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools since 2006.  She managed media relations and crisis, internal and external communications efforts for the district.

For three years, Stalberte led media relations and community relations for the district’s Achievement Zone, a cluster of 11 academically-challenged schools with struggling reputations.  She developed media relations strategies that resulted in more than 500 positive media placements in local and national news.  Stalberte established and managed partnerships with community groups, faith houses, local and national companies that garnered financial support and volunteers for the schools.

“My experiences in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have prepared me for this incredible opportunity,” Stalberte said.  “I look forward to working with Durham Public Schools’ staff and the community to promote the accomplishments of the district.”

Prior to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Stalberte worked for Guilford County Schools as the TV production manager for the district’s educational access channel from 2002-2006.  She also worked as a promotions producer for WDSU-TV in New Orleans.  Stalberte has been on the board of directors for the North Carolina School Public Relations Association since 2008.

She is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and earned a bachelor’s of arts degree from Xavier University of Louisiana.
