Southern High School senior is N.C. State Park Scholar

March 17, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Dr. Bert L’Homme, Associate Superintendent Curriculum and Instruction, 560-3716 DURHAM--Southern High School senior Ashley Forte has been named a Park Scholar by North Carolina State University. The Park Scholarships program is among America's most prestigious undergraduate merit scholarship programs. The $48,000 scholarship pays all expenses for four years of study at N.C. State and includes a stipend for each student to purchase a personal computer and peripherals. Ashley is one of only 57 students from across the country to be named a Park Scholar. "I was really excited to receive the Park Scholarship, especially considering the awesome things my fellow nominees were doing in their schools and communities," said Ashley. "It’s a great honor." Selection criteria for the merit-based Park Scholarships include academic achievement, personal characteristics such as integrity and motivation, exceptional leadership potential and commitment to the betterment of one's community. Ashley is a founding member of the Question Why Youth Empowerment Center, a local tobacco prevention program that will soon become a statewide organization. She is also the Southern marching band’s drum major, a Senior Girl Scout, and a member of the National Honor Society, the Durham Public Schools Youth Orchestra and the "ConXion" youth group at New Horizon Church. "Ashley Forte sets a high standard for a young person’s commitment to academic excellence and community involvement," said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. "We are very proud of Ashley and congratulate her and Southern High School on this stellar accomplishment!" ###
