Seasoned NC school business professional will lead finance, human resources

September 12, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Calvin Dobbins, Associate Superintendent, Administrative Services, 560-3736 DURHAM--Hank Hurd, a veteran in the practice of the business and finance components of public education, has been named Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Human Resources for Durham Public Schools. Hurd has served as Chief Finance Officer and Associate State Superintendent of Financial and Business Services for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction since 1999, where he managed $6.8 billion in state and federal funds and provided technical support in transportation, child nutrition, school facilities, planning, plant operations and facilities insurance. Prior to working at the state department, he was Assistant Superintendent of Auxiliary Services/Finance Officer for Harnett County Schools for seven years, and was the Finance Officer for that school system for the previous 16 years. He has also taught governmental accounting at Campbell University. "I’m very excited about the opportunity to join Dr. Denlinger’s leadership team," said Hurd. "Durham Public Schools is recognized statewide for its innovative educational techniques and solid instructional programs." Hurd holds a Master’s of Business Administration degree from Campbell University and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1985. He is a past president of the North Carolina Association of School Business Officials. He received both the American Association of School Business Officials’ Award for Financial Excellence in Reporting and the Governmental Finance Officers Association’s Award for Financial Achievement in Reporting every year from 1990 through 1999. He also received the North Carolina State Treasurer’s Governmental Accounting/Financial Management Award in 1991 and 1997, and the Public Schools of North Carolina Recognition of Achievement Award every year from 1992 through 1996. "Hank Hurd’s quarter-century of sound public school business and finance background experience is a fitting complement to Durham Public Schools," said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. "The school system’s focus on increased student achievement has incorporated an effective refinement of our finance and human resources departments, and Mr. Hurd’s contribution will greatly enhance our progress." ###
