Seasoned Durham educator to join Hillside staff

June 18, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Calvin Dobbins, Associate Superintendent Administrative Services 560-3736 DURHAM--Elizabeth Shearer, Principal of E.K. Powe Elementary School, has been named Program Administrator of Hillside High School, effective immediately. Her responsibilities will include overseeing curriculum and instruction at the school, with a significant role in implementing the new Hillside High School Plan. Shearer has been principal of Powe Elementary since 1996. Prior to her tenure at Powe, she served as an assistant principal at Holt Elementary School for four years, and a teacher there for three. She previously taught at all levels, from kindergarten through high school, in the United States and in England. She also has extensive background in exceptional children’s education. Shearer is credited for implementing a number of innovative programs that drastically increased student achievement levels at Powe. The school has been designated as both an "Expected" and "Exemplary" Growth school by the state of North Carolina’s Department of Public Instruction. Hillside High School faculty, staff, students and parents, along with several Durham Public Schools Central Services officials, have developed a comprehensive plan that will significantly augment the school’s overall structure and instructional services. Shearer will play an instrumental role in the implementation of that plan. "I am excited to take the opportunity to join Ms. Sanders and the Hillside school community," said Shearer. "E.K. Powe is a thriving school whose community I have come to respect and love over the past six-and-a-half years. I am fully committed to bringing my experience and services to the Hillside team." Shearer holds a bachelor of arts degree from York University in England; a certificate in education from Westminster College at Oxford in England; a master’s degree in special education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and a certificate in educational administration from North Carolina Central University. "Elizabeth Shearer’s superior leadership skills will be vital in the implementation of the new plan for Hillside High School," said Superintendent Ann Denlinger. "Her record of success, along with Principal Eunice Sanders’ expertise, will create a dynamic learning environment for Hillside students and staff." ###
