CONTACT: Dr. Bert L’Homme, Associate Superintendent Instructional Services, 560-3716 DURHAM--Jonathan D. McNeill, a senior at Riverside High School, has been awarded the prestigious Morehead Scholarship from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The $72,000 scholarship, awarded by the Morehead Foundation, will cover full tuition expenses, plus provide an array of academic enrichment activities, including corporate internships and international community service. The scholarship is recognized as one of the most competitive in the nation. It was awarded to only 40 seniors from across the country and around the world.
Selection criteria include leadership, academic achievement, moral force of character and physical vigor. Recipients are selected according to accomplishments and merit rather than financial need.
"I was really surprised and happy to win the award," said Jonathan. "It’s a great opportunity that will give me some great experiences outside the typical college classroom."
Jonathan is President of Riverside’s National Honor Society, President of the SASE tutoring club, co-editors of the school’s award-winning newspaper, captain of the varsity tennis team, and member of the varsity soccer team. He is also involved with Habitat for Humanity and his church youth group.
"Jonathan McNeill exemplifies what a young person can achieve through hard work and dedication to doing one’s best," said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. "We are so proud of this wonderful accomplishment and wish him the very best in his future endeavors!" ###
