Riverside High School senior wins full scholarship to U.S. Naval Academy

DURHAM—Riverside High School senior Sarah Brown has been appointed to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD for the 2008-09 school year.

Acceptance into the prestigious Academy includes full tuition and additional expenses, a total of more than $400,000.  The Academy appoints only approximately 1,200 students nationwide each year.

Sarah plans to graduate from the Academy in four years, at which point she would be a fully commissioned officer of the U.S. Navy.  As part of her tuition, she will serve in the Navy for at least five years after graduation.

“Going to the Naval Academy is like a dream come true for me,” said Sarah. “It’s everything I’ve been looking for in school and as a career, and I would love nothing more than to serve this country.”

Sarah has a 4.662 GPA and is currently ranked 10th in her class.  She is captain of the girls’ varsity track team and cross country team and is a member of the varsity swim team. She is concert mistress of the school orchestra and secretary of the Spanish Honor Society.  She completed a summer internship to study oceanography and marine biology at the University of Miami, and she attended a summer seminar at the Naval Academy in 2007.

Sarah plans to pursue a career in the medical sciences.  While at Riverside, she has excelled in such courses as AP biology II, Calculus, and AP Psychology.

Sarah was recommended to the Academy by Congressional nomination letters from Sen. Elizabeth Dole and Congressman David Price.
