Priority One Projects for the November 2003 Bond Referendum
[Information and detailed descriptions] of projects is now available online.
More than three years into the new millennium, Durham Public Schools has posted its best “report card” ever, with composite scores at their highest in all elementary and middle schools. We now look forward to even greater accomplishments in the coming years as achievement levels continue to rise and enrollment continues to climb.
With the academic success we have experienced, Durham Public Schools has established two major goals:
95 percent or more third-graders reading proficiently by 2007; and,
Eliminating the achievement gap by 2007.
Durham Public Schools’ Long-Range Facilities Plan is designed to support staff members, students, parents, administrators and the broader community toward reaching these goals. A $210 million plan outlines improved learning environments for our students well into the next decade.
The Facilities Plan’s strategies remain consistent with previous plans. There are three main focal points: Eliminating mobile classrooms, providing space for new enrollment growth, and upgrading existing facilities to modern standards. Within these areas of focus are the ongoing goals of meeting instructional standards, maximizing functional space, and maintaining safe learning environments for our students.
Durham voters overwhelmingly approved a $51.8 million bond referendum in 2001 to expand and upgrade facilities, and build a new school. All projects are now either complete or on schedule. A Priority One list of critical needs totaling $105.3 million and outlined below has been developed for consideration for a bond referendum, slated for November 4, 2003. A detailed description of Bond projects is available in pdf format.
