DURHAM—Northern High School graduate Brian Christopher Parham has been named a Park Scholar by North Carolina State University. He is one of only 67 students from across the country to be named a Park Scholar this year.

The Park Scholarships program is among the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate merit scholarship programs. The $59,000 scholarship covers all expenses for four years of study at N.C. State and includes a stipend for each student to purchase a personal computer and peripherals.

“I’m really excited and I am very much looking forward to the opportunity to attend N.C. State and to work with the whole Park program,” said Brian.  “This is a great opportunity for me to pursue my dreams.”

Selection criteria for the merit-based Park Scholarships include academic achievement, personal characteristics such as integrity and motivation, exceptional leadership potential and commitment to the betterment of one’s community.

Brian graduated from Northern with a 5.064 Grade Point Average. He was vice president of the National Honor Society and captain of the varsity cross country and varsity swim teams. He is also an Eagle Scout from Troop 400 and an active member of his church. Brian plans to major in environmental science with a concentration in ecology at N.C. State.

“It is always wonderful to hear about Durham Public Schools students who are achieving such great things.  Brian Parham is a model for what working hard, preparing well and going the extra mile can get you,” said Superintendent Carl E. Harris.  “What a fantastic honor this is for Brian.  We know that he take the fullest advantage of this golden opportunity to create a very bright future for himself.  We congratulate Brian, his family, his teachers and his principal.”
