New Fayetteville Street Principal Named

Rod Teal, Principal of Southern High School, has been appointed Principal of Fayetteville Street Elementary School, replacing Principal Queen Bass Scarborough who is retiring.

Rod TealTeal has been principal of Southern since August 2004.  He was Principal of Neal Middle School for three years prior.  Before serving at Neal, he served as principal of W.G. Pearson Elementary School.  He had also previously served as assistant principal at Brogden Middle School, and was a teacher at W. G. Pearson for several years. He has also worked as a math/science coordinator for the NCCU National Youth Sport Program and as summer school principal at Durham School of the Arts.

Teal requested the transfer last fall to his pursue his doctoral degree, and the desire to spend more time with his family. While at Southern, some of the programs that he helped develop were the 9th Grade Academy, 21st Century After-School Program, expanded the CMA program, Southern School of Engineering, and most recently the Extended Evening Academy. 

"While at Southern, I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with some of the hardest working teachers in Durham Public Schools," Teal said.  "They care enormously for their students and they continue to find ways to help them to be successful.  I have enjoyed my four year tenure at Southern.  I feel blessed to have been associated with the many students, parents, and community members associated with the Southern Family."

Teal earned his N.C. Teacher Certification and Master's degree in Education Administration from NCCU, graduating with honors from both programs. He also received his B.A. in Public Administration from NCCU.
