National Pawn Donation to Ease Shortage of Band Instruments

Former “Band Geek” Bob Moulton comes to the aid of Chewning Middle School students…
Durham, NC – National Pawn owner Bob Moulton is donating more than 100 instruments to the Chewning Middle School band program to help relieve a shortage that has left dozens of students without instruments. In addition, National Pawn will present a check for $2,000 to the school district to off-set future repair and maintenance costs for their instruments. A ceremony will be held at the school, located at 5001 Red Mill Rd. in Durham, at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 23.
Moulton is a product of the Durham Public school system. He was a band member while attending Neal Middle School, Lowe’s grove Middle School, and Southern High School.
“I am a proud former ‘Band Geek’ who knows first-hand what it is like to want to learn how to play, but not have an instrument. I want to help as many students as I can to realize their dreams of becoming musicians,” said Moulton. “My first instrument was purchased at a yard sale. It was barely adequate to say the least. A year later I was able to purchase a better one at a pawn store here in Durham.”
Cuts in education budgets have hit the arts programs especially hard for the past several years.
“We are in dire need of band instruments, especially here at Chewning Middle School,” said Principal John Williams.
“We have 65 students without instruments,” said Band Director Kyle Crudup. “Mr. Moulton’s generous donation is greatly appreciated.”
Area Superintendent Dr. Julie Spencer and Northern Area Superintendent Dr. Debbie Pitman will be on hand to accept the gift.
