DURHAM—Merrick-Moore Elementary School Principal Stacey Wilson-Norman is the 2005 Principal of the Year for Durham Public Schools. Wilson-Norman, principal at Merrick-Moore since March 2000, will represent Durham in the regional competition in the awards program sponsored by Wachovia Bank and the state Department of Public Instruction.
Merrick-Moore Elementary School has shown significant student achievement growth and a substantial increase in parental and community outreach under Wilson-Norman’s leadership. On the state testing program, the ABCs, the school posted its highest performance composite ever in 2004, earning School of Distinction status for the first time.
“Being named Principal of the Year is a great honor for me and a wonderful tribute to the teachers, parents and, of course, the students of Merrick-Moore Elementary School,” said Wilson-Norman. “We have worked so hard together to make our school the best learning environment it can possibly be, and I share this honor with the entire Merrick-Moore community.”
Before coming to Merrick-Moore as principal, Wilson-Norman served as the assistant principal of York Elementary School in Raleigh for two years. Prior to that appointment, she was an assistant principal at Apex Elementary School and had taught at the elementary level at several Wake County schools.
Wilson-Norman holds a master of arts degree in educational administration and a bachelor’s degree in public administration from North Carolina Central University, where she was also certified in elementary education. “Stacey Wilson-Norman’s strong focus and no-nonsense approach has been instrumental in the success that Merrick-Moore Elementary School has experienced over the last four years,” said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. “We’re very proud of Stacey and her team at Merrick-Moore. She will represent our district well in the regional competition.”
A committee comprising several Durham Public Schools principals and the district’s Teacher of the Year selected Wilson-Norman after reviewing nomination portfolios. She will now compete with other local award recipients from the North Central Region of the state. From among the six regions, one principal will be selected as North Carolina’s 2005 Wachovia Principal of the Year. This is the 22nd year Wachovia Bank has sponsored the award. ###
