Jennifer Clarke, Student at Riverside High, 2011 National Scholastic Art Gold Key Winner
Jennifer Clarke, a photography student at Riverside High, was awarded a 2011 National Scholastic Art Gold Key. As part of this prestigious honor, Jennifer, along with her family and teacher, will be invited to a special awards ceremony at the Governor’s Executive Mansion in May. Two DPS Employees Honored

Friday, March 18 was a day of celebration for Durham Public Schools. Two DPS employees were recognized by the North Carolina Association of Gifted and Talented (NCAGT).
 
Beth Cross, DPS Director of Advanced Academics, was named NCAGT School Administrator of the Year. This award is presented to administrators who have been advocates and leaders in support of gifted children/youth.
 
Diana Lisle, Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted (AIG) teacher at Club Boulevard Elementary, was awarded NCAGT Teacher of the Year. This award is presented to teachers of gifted children/youth who exhibit a strong commitment to gifted education through professional experiences, professional organizations, and service in the area of gifted education.
 
Beth and Diana were awarded plaques commemorating their achievements. They will be recognized by the DPS Board of Education at its March 24 meeting. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at the Fuller Building, 511 Cleveland Street. For more information, contact Beth Cross at 919-560-2029.

Technology Showcase Monday, March 21

The 2010-2011 DPS Technology Showcase, presented by Durham Public Schools and Duke University Libraries' Pepsico K-12 Technology Mentor Program, will take place on Monday, March 21st from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the DPS Staff Development Center. The Showcase is held in an open house/fair format and exhibits the outstanding work being done in DPS classrooms with technology. All DPS teachers and students are eligible to present and attend. Topics include: classroom collaboration using Google Apps, iPads in the classroom, Google Earth, interactive whiteboards, stop motion animation, blogging, podcasting, wikis, music technology, e-books, game development and education, student engineering, Alice programming, and much more! Presenters and attendees are eligible to win a variety of prizes including a document camera and a Smart Board courtesy of Cam Cor. Kick Butts Day at Northern and Riverside High Schools Wednesday, March 23 and Thursday, March 24

Throughout the school day, Teens Against Consuming Tobacco members will dress as the Cigarette Grim Reaper and travel to various classrooms to symbolically “kill” their fellow students from tobacco use. Once “killed”, students will wear face makeup to show that they are dead and signs telling others how they died. This activity is designed to demonstrate that 1,200 people die each day in the United States from tobacco use. The Cigarette Grim Reaper activities will take place at Northern High School (117 Tom Wilkinson Road) from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23 and at Riverside High School (3218 Rose of Sharon Road) from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 24. North Carolina Central University Educational Symposium Saturday, March 26

The North Carolina Central University School of Education will host its 3rd Annual Teacher Education Symposium on Saturday, March 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Superintendent Eric Becoats will deliver greetings and Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, a noted education consultant, author and speaker will be the keynote speaker. This year’s critical issues of discussion include educational inequities faced by minority students – particularly Black and Latino males, parenting and teaching strategies that help underserved students succeed, and activism and community outreach that connects with underserved student populations. Kayla’s Closet at Northgate Mall Saturdays: March 26 – April 30

Kayla’s Closet prom boutique was established in loving memory of Kayla Radack to help girls from lower income families to be able to attend prom in a beautiful formal dress. Each school-aged girl will receive one dress and one accessory. Dresses will be given out at Northgate Mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, beginning March 26 and ending April 30. The store is located in Shopes at the Plaza at Northgate Mall near Entrance #4, across from the parking garage, in exterior entrance suite #844.
