King, principal of Glenn Elementary School, has been appointed principal of the Josephine Dobbs Clement Early College High School, a partnership among Durham Public Schools, North Carolina Central University, and SECME, Inc., a non-profit whose mission is to increase minority participation in the fields of science and engineering. The program, focusing on science, technology and math, will allow students to earn a high school diploma and up to two years of college credit. It will open on NCCU’s campus in fall 2004. Dr. King will spend the next year working with DPS and NCCU officials in program design. A committee comprising Glenn parents and teachers will form to search for his replacement. "This is a unique and creative program that will ensure brighter futures for hundreds of young people." Dr. King has been principal of Glenn since 1999. During his tenure, the school has experienced a significant boost in student achievement, with a 26.7 percentage-point increase in composite reading scores and a 37.8 jump in math. Prior to his service at Glenn, Dr. King was assistant principal at Walker Upper Elementary School in Charlottesville, Va. He has also served as assistant principal and teacher in several North Carolina school districts, including Durham Public Schools, where he taught history, geography and related courses at Riverside and the former Durham high schools. "Nicholas King is a proven leader who possesses the skills and attributes that will ensure his success at the new Early College High School," said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger.
