GlaxoSmithKline grant to bolster student achievement at Chewning
DURHAM—GlaxoSmithKline U.S. Community Partnerships has awarded a $100,000 grant to improve student achievement at Chewning Middle School in Durham, North Carolina through the use of student assessments, technology, professional development and additional support.
The GSK grant aims to increase student achievement in four major areas: reading, mathematics, science, and computer skills. The grant will achieve this overarching objective through:
• Providing ClassScapes software for teachers to conduct formative assessments of student performance;
• Expanding computer labs at the school, with the addition of “smart boards,” to bolster computer and technological competency among students;
• Offering teachers more professional development, specifically around enhancing their capacity to teach technology; and,
• Recruiting tutors, particularly from local colleges and universities, to work one-on-one with Chewning students.
“We are committed to the communities we serve, and supporting teachers and schools is always a top priority,” said Mary Linda Andrews, Director, GSK US Community Partnerships. “We believe the program at Chewning Middle School is an important initiative that will help both teachers and students.”
“GlaxoSmithKline once again has graciously demonstrated its concrete commitment to innovation around enhancing achievement for the students of Durham Public Schools,” said Superintendent Carl Harris. “We are grateful not only for this show of support, but also for all the many ways in which GSK has long supported and continues to support our students, our teachers and our mission.”
