Five new principals named for 2010-11 school year

DURHAM—The Durham Public Schools Board of Education has approved the appointment of five new principals effective July 1.

They are:

  • Jordan High School: Gregory A. Newlin, Principal of Lexington High School in Lexington City Schools since 2006.  He replaces Richard Webber, who is retiring.

    Newlin was an Assistant Principal in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for eight years prior to going to Lexington and taught math there and in South Carolina for four years. He is the 2009-10 Lexington City Schools’ Principal of the Year.

    Newlin holds a Master of Education degree in Secondary Administration and Supervision from The Citadel Military College of South Carolina and a Bachelor of Science degree in Pure and Applied Mathematics from The College of Charleston.

  • Rogers-Herr Year-Round Middle School: Dr. Teresa J. Daye, Principal of Hairston Middle School in Guilford County Schools since 2007.  She replaces Drew Sawyer who has accepted a position outside the district.

    Dr. Daye was an assistant principal in Guilford prior to becoming a principal.  She was an instructional resource teacher in Durham Public Schools from 2004 to 2006. She was an educational consultant with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for two years and taught for a number of years in DPS in the 1990s and the early part of this decade. She was an educational programs coordinator at Duke University in the late 1990s.

    Dr. Daye holds both a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and a Master of Science degree in School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She holds a Master of Education in Middle Grades Education from North Carolina Central University and a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Winston-Salem State University.

  • Shepard Middle Magnet School: Ericka I. Boone, Assistant Principal of Shepard since 2006.  She replaces James Ingram.

    Ms. Boone was a principal intern at Hillside High School for one year prior to coming to Shepard.  She was an intermediate teacher at Hillandale Elementary and Rogers-Herr Middle Schools from 1994 through 2005.

    Boone holds a Master of Science degree in School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from North Carolina Central University.

  • Mangum Elementary School: Cindy B. Daniels, Assistant Principal of Frank Porter Graham Elementary School in Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools since 2006.  She also has served as Acting Principal there for two separate brief periods since 2008. She replaces Gwen Johnson, who is retiring.

    Daniels taught at Easley Year-Round Elementary School from 1998 to 2005, except for one year when she served as an editor at Houghton Mifflin Publishing Co.
    Daniels holds a Master of Science degree in School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Emmanuel College in Boston, MA.
  • Parkwood Elementary School: Michael D. Somers, Assistant Principal of Brogden Middle School since 2006.  He replaces Rita Bongarten, who has accepted a position outside the district.

    Somers was an assistant principal at the Urban League of Pittsburgh Charter School for one year prior to coming to DPS.  He also taught at the elementary level for three years in Pittsburgh.  Somers also worked as a behavioral specialist for several years.

    Somers holds a Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration and a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction, along with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education, all from Point Park University in Pittsburgh.
