Eastway assistant principal to take school’s helm
DURHAM—Star L. Sampson, Assistant Principal of Eastway Elementary School, has been appointed Principal of the school. She replaces Myron Wilson, who is now Principal of Neal Middle School.
Sampson has served as Assistant Principal at Eastway for the past two years. Prior to this she was the school’s Curriculum Coordinator for three years. She was assistant band director at Hillside High School for three years, and taught at several elementary schools in Durham from 1982 through 2000.
“I am thrilled to continue working with the Eastway school community and to build upon the many successes we have experienced over the last several years,” said Sampson. “It is an honor to work with parents and community partners who are so dedicated to supporting our students and teachers as we continue to make great strides toward increasing student achievement.”
Once a low-performing school, Eastway is now a School of Distinction under the ABCs of Accountability designation. It was named one of the state’s 25 Most Improved Schools for the 2003-04 school year.
Sampson holds a master’s degree in school administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from North Carolina Central University.
“Star Sampson’s experience and zeal for her profession will ensure that the fantastic progress made at Eastway Elementary School will continue unabated,” said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. “The Eastway students, teachers, staff members, parents and community supporters who have displayed a stellar level of commitment toward improving the students’ achievement level can rest assured that the school will continue to flourish under her leadership.”
