DURHAM – Durham Public Schools announced today Superintendent Dr. Eric Becoats’ Listening & Learning Tour. The Listening & Learning Tour will include meetings with local businesses, non-profit and faith-based organizations, government officials and public entities, institutes of higher learning, housing communities, and Durham Public Schools’ employees.

As part of the tour, Dr. Becoats has scheduled four community town hall meetings. The dates, times and locations for the town hall meetings are as follows:

  • Monday, September 20, Hayti Heritage Center, 6:30-8:00 pm
  • Wednesday, September 22, Little River Community Center, 6:30-8:00 pm
  • Tuesday, September 28, Southwest Elementary School, 6:30-8:00 pm
  • Tuesday, October 5, Spring Valley Elementary School, 6:30-8:00 pm

The purpose of the tour is for Dr. Becoats to gather input that addresses the following questions:

  • What should become the standard in Durham Public Schools within the next ten years?
  • Of those things, what should we accomplish in three years?
  • What is your role in accomplishing our goals?
  • What is going well?
  • What needs improvement?
  • What innovative ideas can we implement in Durham Public Schools?

“Our schools must improve. School improvement is a community issue and requires community solutions,” said Superintendent Dr. Becoats. “This is a fantastic opportunity to lock arms with the concerned residents of Durham and start mapping out our journey to sustained improvement.”

The community input generated by the meetings will be crucial to the development of the school district’s new strategic plan set to be released in January 2011.
