Durham School of the Arts Listed Among Top 500 American High Schools by Newsweek
Durham, NC – Newsweek Magazine has been ranking high schools for more than a decade and recently released its latest ranking of the top 500 high schools in the nation – with Durham School of the Arts listed at number 381.
“The staff, students and leadership at DSA have created a dynamic learning environment,” said Chief of Staff Lewis Ferebee. “Their inclusion on any list of best schools is well-deserved.”
The criteria changed this year as Newsweek revamped its methodology. The goal was to seek out the schools doing the best job preparing college-ready students. To that end, a panel of experts was assembled - Wendy Kopp of Teach For America, Tom Vander Ark of Open Education Solutions (formerly executive director for education at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), and Linda Darling-Hammond, Stanford professor of education and founder of the School Redesign Network.
Each school’s score is now comprised of six components: graduation rate (25%), college matriculation rate (25%), Advanced Placement tests taken per graduate (25%), average SAT/ACT scores (10%), average Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate/Advanced International Certificate of Education scores (10%), and Advanced Placement courses offered (5%).
Durham School of the Arts was one of 21 North Carolina high schools included on the list.
