Durham Public Schools receives national communications awards
The Durham Public Schools Office of Public Affairs has been recognized with several awards from its national professional association. The National School Public Relations Association recently announced its annual awards honoring marketing and communications efforts among local school districts across the country.
Durham Public Schools received a Golden Achievement Award for its promotion of the successful 2007 school bond referendum. The school system worked in partnership with Durham County government and other agencies on the bond campaign, which resulted in a nearly 4-to-1 approval by voters for the district’s largest-ever bond referendum.
The DPS Office of Public Affairs also received an Award of Excellence for the district’s Community EdLink email newsletter. The publication is distributed to more than 3,000 subscribers from businesses, universities and community organizations that support Durham Public Schools. There were 76 Awards of Excellence awarded from among nearly 1,200 entries in the publications and electronic media contest nationwide.
The department also was cited with two Awards of Merit. One was in the Identity/Image Package category, for the distric’s promotion of the new Performance Learning Center at Northgate Mall. The other was the Annual Report category for the district’s 2007 State of the System publication.
Since 1935, the National School Public Relations Association has been providing school communication training and services to school leaders throughout the United States, Canada, and the U.S. Dept. of Defense Dependents Schools worldwide. NSPRA's mission is to advance education through responsible communication.
