Tuesday, November 16

Mayor Bell honors teacher who most influenced him

As part of the TeachersCount and Staples celebration program, local "celebrities" will honor teachers who influenced them.  The Mayor selected Ms. Fairley, from Shepard Middle as the teacher who most influenced him.  On Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 10:00 a.m., Shepard Middle School will be presented with a $1,000 gift card from Staples.  TeachersCount and Staples are working to build appreciation for teachers nationwide. By honoring local "celebrities" for their contributions and recognizing the teachers who influenced them, these organizations hope to show that behind every great citizen is a great teacher. 

Wednesday, November 17

DPS students participate in national discussion on STEM

Time Warner Cable (TWC) will host a live interactive online town hall called “Math, Science and the Future of Our Nation,” hosted by former Vice President Al Gore.  This unique event is part of Connect a Million Minds (CAMM), TWC’s philanthropic commitment to connect youth to ideas, people and opportunities that will inspire them to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).  Among the panelists: internationally known science and technology leaders including inventor Dean Kamen and astronaut Sally Ride.

Several schools across the country, including DPS’ Githens, Durham School of the Arts, Lowe’s Grove, Neal and Chewning middle schools will participate by hosting a viewing party.  Students can submit live video questions and comments during the Global Online Town Hall. The event will begin at 12:00 p.m.

Wednesday, November 17

Superintendent’s Media Briefing

Superintendent Eric J. Becoats will hold his monthly media briefing Wednesday, Nov. 17, 10-11 a.m. at Neal Middle School.  Dr. Becoats will update the media on the Durham Public Schools Race to the Top proposal, the 2011 Budget and have an open discussion about other district initiatives.  Neal Middle School is located at 201 Baptist Road.

Thursday, November 18

Monthly Board Meeting

On Thursday, Nov.18, the Board of Education will hold their monthly meeting.  It will start at 6:30 p.m.  The location for the meeting is the Board Room at the Fuller Administration Building located at 511 Cleveland Street.  Topics to be discussed include the Administrative Committee’s proposal for the Board’s legislative agenda.
